The popular Dixie Twin Drive-In Theater in North Dayton continues to thrive in this age where most other drive in movie theaters are closing up or selling off their properties to developers. This theater continues to succeed in part because of being able to make use of the property during non-operational hours by doubling up as a flea market, and also by making the upgrades necessary to compete as a modern entertainment venue.

During the off-season of 2008, the owners of this drive in theater hired us to come up grading plan that would allow their customers to view the 2nd projection screen more comfortably.

When the theater was originally constructed over 60 years ago, there was only one screen at the far end of the property, and all the parking mounds were directed towards it. Recently, a 2nd screed was erected in the front of the property, but the parking mounds hadn't been adjusted to accommodate it yet.

We designed a layout and mound details for area where cars would be viewing this 2nd screen. The plan made use of the existing topography so that drainage from the site would remain by gravity, eliminating the need for expensive drain piping.

We also specified for the mounds to be constructed from recycled asphalt product (RAP) in place of loose gravel. RAP is cheaper than gravel and will not have the dust or mud problems that gravel drives tend to have. Also, after a season of operation in the summer heat, RAP will re-bind and become more like a paved surface (just not as smooth). For drives supporting slow moving vehicular traffic, this is the perfect choice.
