Norton Engineering provided structural engineering, drafting, and construction management assistance to a residence in Harrison Township/Dayton, Ohio. The homeowner wished to expand the home in order to provide more bedrooms and bathrooms for their large family. Because the property is narrow, the only way to expand was up. Norton designed a second story to be added to the existing building. Structural adequacy of the first floor was analyzed and accounted for in the design, which included extra lateral support for the first floor.

The homeowner elected to do most of the construction himself, so Norton provided a detailed material cost estimate and a construction phasing plan. The homeowner would be living in the home during the construction process, so special planning was needed to maintain a safe environment, especially while the roof was to be removed. Norton continued to support the homeowner with construction supervision throughout the project.
