Lift Station and Force Main Design:
Northeast Ohio Church Campground

Existing Sand Filter
Existing Sand Filter
This church campground in northeast Ohio has an existing "package wastewater treatment plant", including a septic tank which discharges to a couple of sand bed filters which discharge to a chlorination tank before the effluent goes into the nearby stream. This system operates within EPA clean water standards for most of the year, but when tested during the busy season, it has failed. The church is required to either improve the system or find a new solution.

The church hired Norton Engineering to find a new solution. The simplest and most environmentally sound plan in this case is to pipe all of the wastewater from the campground to the nearest sewer system. The church prefers this plan because it relieves them of the maintenance responsibilities that go with having the package treatment system, and the EPA prefers this plan because it leaves the treatment supervision up to the professionals at the County Wastewater Treatment Plant. The nearest County sewer is about a half mile away. The project requires a lift station and a force main to transport the wastewater to the existing County sewer. The construction of this system will not be easy considering that the best path for pipe is through rough wooded terrain with shallow bedrock, but it is better than the alternatives. The proposed path of the force main runs through a state park, but the State has agreed to grant the church a simple easement.

Norton designed the pump station to utilize some of the existing sewage system as emergency back-up so that a generator would not be needed. Also, the design proposes that 2 pipelines to be laid in the same trench. The second line gives the ability to adapt to future growth of the camp and also serves as a backup line in the case of a failure in the primary line. The largest cost of the force main will be in the trenching, so adding a second line to the same trench will only add minimal cost to total budget. Details

Since the construction through the woods will be difficult, Norton selected HDPE as the pipe material. HDPE comes on reels in large continuous lengths, which will cut down on labor time and eliminate joints (which have the potential for leakage). Also, the flexibility of HDPE will allow the contractor to maneuver around trees and other significant vegetation, leaving the State Park in its natural condition.
